‘Copying’ was all the rage at QUT’s second Careers & Current Awareness in IP discussion held at QUT.

On 15 May 2014 a combined gathering of students and local practitioners engaged with academic experts in a discussion of current issues for copyright reform. The panel of Professor Tom Cochrane, Professor Kamal Puri and Dr Nic Suzor addressed the recent Australian Law Reform Commission report on copyright, international developments in copyright law including WIPO treaties and the mooted Trans Pacific Partnership, as well as considering recent significant decisions.

Questions from the audience prompted discussion on the implementation of fair use in Australia, the relevance of copyright in a global digital environment, how potential reforms might be received in practice. The impact of bilateral agreements on domestic copyright laws also was mooted.

The discussion series, presented by the QUT Intellectual Property Program, is aimed at giving assistance to students interested in career opportunities in the IP field, and to provide awareness about current issues in IP.
